JR Hildebrand, March 2012

In early March of this year I was asked by Hector Sancez at Indianapolis Monthly to do a wetplate collodion portrait of 24 year old IndyCar driver J R Hildebrand for the May issue. When we originally scheduled the job, we were fortunate to have a forcast of about 68 degrees. Unusual for early March. Because of JR's busy schedule, we had to change it to one day earlier. Unfortunately it was only 28 degrees that day, which meant we had to work indoors. Wetplate photography becomes more problematic in the cold. Luckily, I was able to set up near one of the many garage doors in Panther Racing's facility. After setting everything up, including JR in his first pose and preparing a plate for exposure, we opened the garage door behind the camera. That provided us with plenty of daylight and a blast of cold air. The first ambrotype, pictured here, is the one used in the magazine.

Beautiful light

This took some planning when I decided to make these photographs. Setting up to use the wet plate process takes some time. I had a limited amount of time since I knew the light would rake across the bricks for just a few minutes. Cleaning, coating, sensitizing and exposing the glass plate took a total of about 10 minutes. The timing worked out perfectly.

Fruit and Rust

3 wet plate still lifes. One of the things I love about the wet plate process is the way it renders certain colors. It is practically blind to orange and yellow. The 3 apples were yellow. The other fruit still life is a cherry, lemon and orange.

Townsend Collection artifacts

These are some of the beautiful prehistoric native American artifacts from the Townsend collection which I photographed. It was an educational experience and an honor to be able to spend time with these pieces. My favorite piece was a birdstone (the second photo in this series), but unfortunately I couldn't outbid the lucky person who spent $100,000 to get it.

One of many photographs I did for a series of ads promoting small businesses. The dog was not harmed in the making of any of the photographs. This was his reaction to his housemate who was being held just out of sight of the camera. The other dog was acting the same way. They fiercely hated each other and would stay on different floors of the same house. It got pretty loud in the studio.

NYC 1986

After I left the employ of Irving Penn in 1986 I worked as a freelance assistant to as many photographers as I could. One who's name I won't mention had a top floor studio on Madison Avenue with a great view of the Chrysler Building. I used one of his long lenses and took some photographs of it through a dirty window. Recently, I came across the slides and scanned them then did some Photoshop work on them. This is one of the frames.
